As a reputable and responsible breeder, I care immensely about the well being of my dogs first and foremost. In order for me to give my dogs the best, most fulfilled and happy life while also being apart of a breeding program it is important for me to limit how many dogs I keep physically at my home as I DO NOT believe in running a breeding program where dogs are living in kennels. All my dogs are beloved pets and members of the family and run free wherever they please in my home. On the other hand, to be a good breeder of quality dogs, we also must keep, evaluate, and continuously add quality bloodlines to our breeding program. We like to keep a few of our pick puppies to monitor their growth and development. Some will eventually fit into our breeding program someday, but as we only breed the best, some also will not make the cut. We prefer to place these pick puppies in guardian homes. A golden retriever needs to be a part of the family to develop their full potential. That is why we have a guardian program. The guardian home program is an excellent deal for the dog, it’s a good deal for the guardian parents, and it’s a good deal for producing an exceptional golden retriever breeding program. I’ve been offering guardianships for many years now and it’s one of those rare “win – win” situations for everyone involved. The family receives a quality, health tested and top pick dog at no cost. I am able to improve the breed by using only the best candidates for bettering the breed. And the whole reason we initiated our guardian program – the dog lives in a home as a spoiled pet, gets lots of individual attention and care, and NEVER will experience a traumatic “rehome” once retired after only ever knowing the breeder. They remain with their guardian from puppyhood through their last days. We are giving the dog to the guardian family to raise and love and keep as a member of their family forever. This program allows local families an opportunity to own one of the best golden retrievers available at zero cost and also be a vital part of responsible and ethical breeding practices that preserve the breed and produce healthier goldens for all to enjoy.

As a guardian home puppy grows up, we closely monitor the temperament, drive, and health. If the dog is exceptional and a great ambassador of the breed in all aspects, he/she may be used in our breeding program. We DO NOT take back permanent possession of the dog if they enter our breeding program but instead work closely with our guardians as a team. The dog will continue to live with their guardians full time except for when actively raising a litter which will be done at my home so I can monitor mama and litter closely and provide the full time care, early neonatal stimulation, vet care & essential socialization and early training needed for well rounded, well socialized pups & healthy mama through the process. Before any dog is bred all genetic testing will be performed as well as going to a reproductive specialist vet to be cleared for future reproduction. If the dog does not pass all genetic testing and is not deemed healthy enough to carry/sire litters by the repro vet, he/she will be fixed at the expense of the breeder and all legal ownership paperwork will be transferred to the guardian at that time. If a female passes all testing and is cleared for reproduction her breeding career will begin on or after her second heat. She will be evaluated after every litter by the repro vet and both timing of breedings and length of breeding career will be at the breeder’s discretion upon the professional opinion of repro vet but never to exceed 4 litters maximum. Our average is 3 litters per female. Females are generally in guardianship until her 6th year of age or 4th litter (maximum, average is 2-3 litters with us before retirement). After the 6th year of age or after the completion of last litter (whichever comes first) breeder will pay to have dog fixed and all ownership papers will be signed over to guardian family forever.

Males are in guardianship until they turn 7 years of age. At 7 years of age, breeder will have male neutered and all ownership papers will be signed over to guardian parents forever. Guardianship on a male is very simple. The male will remain with guardian family full time aside from the occasional times I need to borrow him for a “date” with a female that needs bred. I usually only need the male for a few hours at a time and then is returned home after.

General life expectancy of well bred and cared for Golden Retrievers is around 14 years but can live up to 18 years with lots of love and care.

As an added thank you to our wonderful guardians I do allow guardians to reserve one puppy out of their guardian dog’s last litter to keep as beloved pet at half cost.

  1. On being a Guardian with River Heights Gilden Retrievers

We first had the pleasure of meting Rebecca after our beloved Golden Jake passed…our remaining Golden was sad with a large hole in his life as they were strongly bonded as was the effect on my wife and I. We were wanting a rescue Golden to bring home and were looking when I saw the foster opportunity with River Heights Goldens.
We started a conversation with Rebecca and set up a time to meet Henry. We fell in love with him from the start that part was clear. Rebecca was great at explaining how unethical breeders were doing damage to the breed as health issues took so many at young ages and that health testing and monitoring would help our beloved pups remain with us as long as possible.
It made solid sense and we brought our Henry home a beloved member of our family loved by the neighbors as well.
Henry has a great life with dates and opportunities for encounters with Golden females producing beautiful pus one of which will grace our home in the near future. Though the years Rebecca has become a friend and always supportive of our Golden journey we fully support her mission to provide healthy Goldens to the community including service dogs.
The Guardian program for our family has been a wonderful experience and has brought us a valued beloved family member. If you have the right home and temperament becoming a Guardian with River Heights Goldes is a great opportunity to bring home a Golden Retriever to enhance you and your family’s life.

  2. Guardianship with River Heights Golden Retrievers
I have been a guardian with River Heights Golden Retrievers for four years. It has been such a positive experience that I want to share what I’ve learned in case someone is considering being a guardian.
My first experience with Rebecca Peterson, owner of River Heights Golden Retrievers, was when she came to my house to interview me (and I her) for the possibility of being a guardian for a female dog that she had coming from Ukraine. The interview was more like a conversation with a friend. Rebecca talked about her expectations, asked me about my experiences with dogs (my most recent dog had recently passed away), and had a quick tour of my backyard. It was a delightful chat. I so appreciated that she wanted each of her dogs to live in a home and be loved and cared for as a treasured pet. By purchasing dogs from overseas, she was trying to improve the breed her in the United States.
When Ellie arrived, I went to Rebecca’s home to meet her and bring her home. Rebecca had kept her for about a week so Ellie would recognize her and the environment so that when it came time for her to have puppies, she would be more comfortable.
Ellie wasn’t bred that first year with me. Rebecca wanted her to just become “my dog” and get acclimated to her new “forever” home. When she did have Ellie bred that 2nd year, Rebecca did all of the work of getting Ellie together with the male dog, etc. Then about a week before the puppies were due, she had Ellie come and stay at her home where the puppies would be born. Rebecca kept me up-to-date as to how Ellie was doing and sent me lots of pictures of both Ellie and her puppies. When Ellie had weaned the puppies, I brought her home.
This transition of leaving her puppies (and her new friend Ivy, Rebecca’s Golden) was sad for Ellie and so I asked if she ever had a guardian dog returned? Rebecca said no, almost never. Well, about a week later she let me know that one of her guardian families was moving to Texas and couldn’t take Winnie with them. So, we had the girls meet and next thing you know, I was guardian to two beautiful girls. Now I have two happy Goldens.
Working with Rebecca has been such a joy. I feel like we have become good friends. When I have any kind of question regarding the care or behavior of my dogs, she is ALWAYS helpful, even if it has nothing to do with their breeding.
Rebecca truly cares about her dogs and their puppies. She wants them all to live in homes where they will be loved and well card for. She wants what is best for each dog. What a delight to know a breeder who cares more about her dogs then the bottom line.
If you are considering being a guardian, I would highly recommend you do so with Rebecca at River Heights Golden Retrievers. It is awesome way to get a very well bred Golden Retriever and the golden opportunity to work with an amazing and caring breeder.

  3. As someone who grew up with a golden in my family, I always wanted one for my kids. My best friend recommended us for the guardianship program and while we were nervous we jumped in with Maddy. Maddy is perfect and the funniest, best addition to our family. We loved Maddy so much we ended up a few years later with Pearl.
Rebecca has made the guardianship program so easy for us! She is so attentive to the dogs(the boys and the girls) I know they only ever see the most love there, I’ve never worried once. She takes such good care of the mamas and the puppies, and all the puppies only ever go to a good home.
I know any dog we get from her will have the BEST temperament and be the most loving dog we’ve ever had. We will definitely be doing guardianship again one day.
I love that through all of this Rebecca has become one of our great friends. And I love that they have always just accepted us, got to know our little family and helped answer any questions we have.
We have ran into a few of Pearls puppies out and about, and it’s so crazy to see how well they are doing!
All that to say, we love Rebecca, River Heights, and the guardianship program. Thankful to have such a wonderful person who took care of our girls for so long! 🖤
I definitely would recommend it to anyone curious! If anyone has any questions I’m sure Rebecca will send you my way! I wouldn’t mind!
